Today I Made... Seven goals for 2011

As Maria from the Sound of Music sings...  "Let's start at the very beginning..."

The seven goals I have for 2011 stem out of a decision to live the next 12 months (and the rest of my life) with intentionality.  In fact, I am going to be participating in an online class called "One Little Word".  Here is an excerpt from the instructor's opening remarks.

"Because words are important to me, I always like to start out a lot of my classes with a quote or something to think about. I came across this one, which is from Confucius. It says, "Words are the voice of the heart." I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately as I’ve been getting ready for this class and as I’ve been planning out the different prompts that we’re going to have throughout the year, and I loved the visual of this. The kind of idea of words coming out of the heart and that words give voice to our hearts. It’s just something that I really enjoyed and wanted to make sure that I shared with you as we begin the class this year."  -Ali Edwards

And my word for 2011 is INTENTIONAL - Done or made or performed with purpose and intent.

And the first Intentional act for Jan 1, 2011, is to make a list of seven goals I want to accomplish by Dec 31, 2011.  (In no particular order) and SMART:  specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

1.  Lose 30 pounds.
2.  Run a 5K
3.  Blog at least twice a week
4.  Knit 1 square per week for Knit-a-Square
5.  Learn to play O Holy Night on the guitar
6.  Read through the whole Bible
7.  Finish "One Little Word" book

So this is my list of seven...  What are yours?

11.26.10 - Today I Made...a list of some things I'm thankful for.

It seems that the perfect day to do this is Thanksgiving, but I want to have a thankful heart everyday, so I made my list today.

1.  Jesus' love for me.  Everyday I grow more and more aware of how much I don't deserve His love, yet He extravagantly showers me with it.

2.  Mike.  Sometimes I don't know how he handles my ups and downs, but he does it with such patience and grace.  God knew exactly the perfect husband for me.

3.  My family.  Now there's a great bunch of people!

4.  My job.  I get to help kids learn how to live out their faith in Jesus on a regular basis.  It really doesn't get any better than that for me.

5.  My dogs.  People think I'm crazy, but I really have trouble finding words to describe how thankful I am for my dogs.  They bring great peace and love to my life.

6.  My friends.  God has blessed me with a great group of friends.  I don't take friendship lightly and these folks are rock solid.

7. My home.  Not perfect, but uniquely ours.

11.25.10 - Today I Made... myself walk 5 kilometers.

It's Turkey Trot time again.  My friend Cathy and I signed up for the 5K and finished in respectable time on Thanksgiving morning.  It was a glorious morning with close to 4000 people participating.  Great way to start the day and a great way to eat Thanksgiving dinner... no regrets!

11.24.10 - Today I Made... an annual review of my Life List.

Today's my birthday.... and each year I feel the need to review my Life List, to see where I'm at and where I need to start applying my attention.  It keeps me honest and on track.

11.23.10 - Today I Made... a connection

I have two dogs.  Woody (on right) and Ellie (on left).  They are both rescues from the Sacramento SPCA.  Woody, an English Pointer mix, is 8 1/2 and Ellie (Elinor), a Belgian Shepard/Lab mix, is 5.  They are wonderful dogs, but came with their fair share of issues.  For the first five months that Woody lived with us, he was with me 24/7 because he freaked out when he was left by himself.  Thankfully when Ellie came along, her presence caused him to calm down enough to be left at home.

God often reveals his character or helps me to understand spiritual matters through my dogs and the connection I made today involves His love for me.  I've never had kids and while I can intellectually understand unconditional love, the closest I am going to come to actually feeling the reality of that is through my dogs.  Lately Ellie has become quite clingy with me, like a toddler who is afraid to leave mom.  This is strange because she has always been a very independent dog.  Now I know they are dogs, but they do have personalities and as they age so do their personalities.
Ellie was hugging close to my legs and not giving me much room to maneuver while I was getting ready and it was becoming irritating, and out of desperation I said to her, "Ellie, don't you know how much I love you.  You don't have to worry... I'm not going anywhere."

In that moment, I had a brief, miniscule flash of what God's love for me must be like.  It's like He was saying, "Grace, don't you know how much I love you.  You don't have to worry..."  And God's love is perfect, unlike mine which falters.  It was a very peaceful, reassuring moment.  I sometimes make the mistake of thinking that God deals with me the same way I deal with Him or with other people.  Thank goodness He doesn't!  Thank goodness His ways are not my ways!

11.22.10 - Today I Made... a Christmas Movie List

11.21.10 - Today I Made... time to watch the Movie, "Chocolat"

I am trying to be better at making time to just enjoy a good movie or read a good book and not feel guilty that I'm not necessarily accomplishing anything.  It was wonderful to just lose myself in the movie for two hours and then go and make a big mug of hot chocolate minus the chile pepper.

Things I loved about the movie:
  • Taking a musty, dirty dingy shop and turning it into a warm, inviting chocolate haven.
  • How Vianne cares for complete strangers.
  • The mini-tutorial on how to make chocolate candy.
  • The preparation for the Chocolate Dinner Party.
  • Judi Dench as Armande.  I love Judi Dench in anything.
  • How Vianne shows great love and forgiveness to the towns people who have dismissed her.
  • The kangaroo hopping away at the end of the movie.
Take time to watch it and make up your own list of things you love.

P.S.:  You really should NOT feed chocolate to dogs.  Not good for them.
